The Dakota Center Homework Club is a curriculum-based after-school program open to K-8 students in Montgomery County. Our objective is to help students succeed in school by providing a safe learning environment, homework assistance, and character development opportunities.
We strongly believe that the demonstration of good character provides a foundation for success in all other areas of life. Our values are reflected in current educational reform initiatives, such as the Common Core Standards, that seek to grow independent, discerning, and persistent learners. We utilize Character Counts’ Six Pillars of Good Character (Responsibility, Respect, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) as a framework for our character education.
Enrollment in the program is opened in advance of each school year and again before the second semester. We currently enroll approximately 60 students. Students are invited to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Every student is required to attend weekly activities in etiquette, character development, Dakota Leadership and financial literacy. Choice activities vary during the year, including arts and crafts, cooking, games, gardening, basketball, service opportunities, and more.
