Ending hunger in Dayton: A Progress Report

Dr. Martin L King’s remarks on ending hunger

Martin Luther King, Jr fought for freedom and that included freedom from hunger. As we commemorate Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 20th, let’s remember that one of his dreams was ending hunger and poverty in America. In his speech at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965,  he said: “March on until no starved man walks the streets of our cities and towns in search of jobs that do not exist.” Today there are still 41 million Americans living in hunger including 11 million children.  For them, freedom from hunger is just a dream.

Dr. King proclaimed in his Nobel Peace Prize speech, “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education, and cultures for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”  That’s a belief shared by Ambassador Tony Hall and everyone connected with the Hall Hunger Initiative.  We must all keep working until that dream comes true.
