March is Women’s History Month

Maya Angelou was a famous author best known for her autobiographical writing style (womenshistory.org). Angelou was born in 1928 and spent most of her life switching between living with her mother and living with her grandmother. When Angelou got to the age were she wanted to be able to start working, she submitted applications to many different jobs. She eventually secured a job being the first African American woman streetcar conductor.

Following her jobs and education, Angelou began to write for the Harlem Writer Guild which was to support the Black authors being published. Along with this Angelou began to become involved in the Civil Rights movement. She helped organize and coordinate events and worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Angelou also focused on her writing and wrote the first play to be turned into a screenplay by an African American woman. With all these accomplishments, Angelou was recognized around the world for her contribution to not only the writing community, but all of her achievements throughout life.
