Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year. Today is the 21st annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration. On average this national celebration pulls together a million Americans at more than 8,000 events to rally for afterschool.
We know this is not an average year, and many afterschool programs, like The Dakota Center, have risen to the moment. We join our afterschool brothers and sisters in providing care, supervision, and homework help for children when schools are closed, help families access healthy meals, check on our neighbors, and help both students and families navigate distance learning challenges. Quality afterschool programs, like the Center’s, offer the best out-of-school time choice for families in the Dayton area. We thank the community for entrusting us with this responsibility.
