Mobile Food Pantry #6….over 24,000 lbs of food distributed so far

Mobile Food Day #6
MacFarlane/Five Points/Edgemont
Dakota Center, Inc.

Thursday, September 20, 9:00 a.m., the sixth Mobile Food Day served west Dayton residents in three neighborhoods, MacFarlane/Five Points/Edgemont. The Edgemont Neighborhood is a HUD Choice neighborhood and one of the four neighborhoods targeted by the Dayton Neighborhood Corps. The location for this event was the Dakota Center, Inc., 33 Barnett Street. Dayton, OH 45402.

The registration time for clients was scheduled at 9:00 a.m. Registration began earlier due to clients arriving close to 7:30 a.m. Clients living in the 45417 and 45402 zip codes were served, however no residents were turned away. All who registered were served.

Our continued goal for this project is to address the growing need of community residents who have no ability to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables from local area markets in their immediate neighborhood. The Dayton Food Bank Mobile Truck provided free produce, fruit, and bread products to clients who registered with the local food bank. The Dakota Center, Inc. also sponsored a Senior Health Fair as part of the entire event.

The Dayton Neighborhood Corps (Department of Planning & Community Development/U.D.) and Dakota Center, Inc. were responsible for the recruitment of volunteers including members from other community churches in Residence Park and the MacFarlane/Five Points/Edgemont neighborhoods. Other volunteers were members of the Residence Park neighborhood association, Community Development staff, AmeriCorps, and staff from the Dakota Center, Inc.
