We held our annual Fall Open House/Trunk or Treat Community event on Saturday, October 15th. It was a beautiful day and about 80 people showed up to go on a hayride, brave the Haunted Conference Room, grab some popcorn and a bunch of candy.
Our STEM ADVENGERS conducted a “Force of Impact” experiment where they learned during impact, an object’s energy is converted into work. To minimize the force of a collision we took pumpkins, placed them in a milk crate, wrapped various levels of padding around the pumpkin, and dropped it from 20 feet.
While that was a very well received experiment teaching the children the importance of wearing a helmet when riding bikes, skateboarding, etc. what really fired up the crowd was something not planned.
After our experiment was over, the DFD extended the latter on the truck to its maximum height (~137 feet) and dropped a pumpkin through our new basketball rim. The pumpkin barley scrapped the iron and swooshed through the net. While the Executive Director was not too pleased with this experiment (since we just replaced the 3 outdoor basketball hoops with new equipment) the crowd sure was! Thankfully, only the pumpkin was damaged, and everyone had a great time. See you next year.
