On August 6, 2022, we held our 2nd of 5 Literacy Night combined with our Back-to-School Community Block Party. 53 registered which qualified them to be entered into our raffle. We estimated each registered person brought at least 2 other people so about 150 community members attended.
They were treated to grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, pasta salad for dinner and popcorn for a snack. Life Connection of Ohio sponsored Kona Ice so we could have a cool, refreshing desert or something to wash down the popcorn. We had a DJ cranking tunes and 2 drill teams put on a short performance.
We also 15 vendors offering their services to the community. In addition to Life Connection of Ohio, we had Pre-School Promise, Dayton Children’s, Dayton Metro Library, Dayton Mediation Center, Wesley Dayton, Dayton Athletic Vocation Academy, Paramedicine (who help our seniors manage their health), ABLE (Advocates for Basic Legal Equity), just to name a few. We thank all our partners for supporting Dakota Center and the larger community that we serve.
For those who registered, they were entered into the raffle. We raffled off (1) $50 Kroger Gift Card, (1) BMX Bike with lock and 2 helmets, and (3) $250 Utility Gift Certificates. Thanks to our friends at Meijer Englewood, we have been offering utility assistance up to $250 for home utilities (gas, water, electric).
Everyone left with school supplies, a full stomach, ears pounding from the Drill Team drums, and bags full of items given out by our vendors. With vendors we estimate there were 200 total people who had a great time from 5pm-7pm.
Now we turn our attention to October 15th and our annual Fall Harvest Open House and Truck or Treat Community Event. Mark your calendars now from 12noon to 2pm. Hope to see you there!
